Hi, I'm Ed.
I make large, colourful abstract works. Each starts with a photograph. I leave out what isn't needed, and sometimes a few changes are enough to bring what was already there to life.
I was born in The Hague in 1964 and work from my studio in Assen, in the Netherlands. I took my first photographs at eight, with my father's Agfa roll-film camera: pigeons on the Dam in Amsterdam, among other things. At sixteen I bought my first SLR and extra lenses for it.
I've never found the camera itself very important, and the technical talk around it even less. What matters is whether the photograph is interesting.
Every seven to ten years I end up doing something completely different: computer science and business, building companies, designing toys. Each time I hesitate for a while, and each time I go anyway. Looking back, none of it was wasted. Slowly, it is all coming together.
Photography is the one thing that ran underneath all of it.
I exhibited for seven or eight years and then stepped back. Not from the work, but from the circuit around it. I liked making the images more than I liked the world that came with them.
Most of my buyers didn't talk to me at the exhibition anyway. They called me later, in their own time.
I already wanted to sell my work directly online in 2005. What interested me was simple: letting people discover the work for themselves, without having to walk into a gallery or have someone explain it to them. At the time, it felt too early, so I let the idea go.
Years later, it came back.
I had never stopped making work, only more quietly. Going through the older images again, I began to see connections I hadn't seen before. New work joined them. Series started to form.
Some of the works here were made recently. Others are older pieces, retitled and placed in a new sequence. Together they are the photographic side of the work I once showed under the name Images from Within, seen more clearly.
